It’s Friday and you know what that means! It is time for the Marketing for Owners Weekend Challenge. Today we are talking about lead magnets. I have mentioned them before.
Now, I don’t want you listening and not knowing what one is so be sure and check out the link above and it will give you all sorts of links to articles and podcasts that I have done regarding lead generation.
Now, according to the interwebs, the entire purpose of having a website is for lead generation. This does not apply if you are an e-commerce site like Amazon or if you are trying to sell something.

Lead generation is not hoping that someone finds your website, hoping they will read it, hoping they will go to the contact us page.
It’s so that they can perhaps wait until the next day and phone you up, or even to fill out your email form.
Lead generation is getting their name and email onto a list, such as a database in an automated fashion because that is the way to do it.
Generally we do that by offering something of value, that your potential lead or customer has an interest in.
This would be something that they would probably be prepared to pay for, but certainly prepared to exchange their email for.
So, in other words, they are giving you permission to market to them, and that’s where the lead magnet comes in.
Now, we call it a lead magnet because it attracts leads like a magnet. Then we work on converting them to a lead nurturer to convert them to a purchaser, and so it goes.
But, a lot of people get hung up and stuck on ideas for lead magnets, because quite often, you are comparing them to things you have seen elsewhere.

Now, a 12 day course might be overwhelming for you, and that’s okay. You don’t need to do that. You can just have them download an ebook (have you seen our 71 Tools for Marketing lead magnet?)
So let’s get our pen and our piece of paper and get ready to learn some new ideas for lead magnets that you can use and that won’t overwhelm you.

#1 A Top 5 Resource Guide
For example — if you are a photographer, why not do a guide with your top 5 choices of the best photography gear?
How about doing a resource guide with the top 5 pieces of photography equipment that is in your camera bag?
You could even do one about the top 5 items you use to keep your gear looking clean and professional.
All of these are easy to do and not overwhelming at all.
Now, you may be thinking, why would anyone want to download these if they are looking for a photographer?
Quite often, people have an interest in photography, and they want an expert, but they want to know you are really good at what you do.
They are interested in what you use and because it is all photography related, it works.
#2 Top 5 Most Popular Posts
Now, I am talking the top 5 most popular posts on your website. So to save your potential readers and customers time of having to wade through all your posts, give them a top 5 list of your most popular ones.
You just paste the links in so that they can click on them and read them when they want, how easy is that?
You can write a little summary of each and include a little picture, but it should just be a one page document for them to download.
#3 Q and A About You
How about writing down a lot of questions and answers and having a colleague interview you? You can do the interview on video on a camera or an ipone or even just audio.
Then that can be transcribed by someone like Fiverr, or you can just put the video up on Youtube. If you want the video edited, you can do that on Fiverr too.
But, be relevant and answer questions that your readers may have concerning your niche that would help your customers out.
This is super easy so don’t be afraid of it.
#4 How to Save Money Checklist
For example, we sell fire extinguishers in my fire safety business and fire safety supplies, so we could do a checklist on how to save money when purchasing your first fire extinguisher or something like that.
In that checklist we could include things like only buy from reputable companies, only do this, only do that, never allow anyone to install anything without getting your approval first, etc.
Use your industry knowledge to create this list. And don’t tell me people do not want to know how to save money when they are purchasing from you. They do!
How about that for transparency and honesty? Trust me, they are going to love you!
#5 Facts and Myth Listings
Now, again, you are going to create an industry guide for this. For instance, if you are in the fire safety business, you could offer a one pager about the facts and myths of fire safety industry.
For example, in one of ours, we offer one about the British laws for fire extinguishers in the industry. These are standards and not laws.
You can offer a list of facts and a list of myths and people love lists. What this does it shows that you are an expert.
#6 Free One on One Session With You
Now, you can get this from us as well. Now, don’t think you can’t do this. If you are in business and your customer calls you to talk to you about your services, you would gladly give them a quote wouldn’t you?
Of course you would, so why not call that a one on one consultancy where you can give them advice and talk to them about what you do?
Advertising costs money, so when someone requests one on one time with you then that is fantastic and so much better than answering an ad.
This will give you a chance to talk to your potential customer and find out what their problems are so that you can solve them.
Now, those are 6 easy things you can do as lead magnets that will allow your readers and potential customers to sign up and give you their email address so that you can get them into your database.
Guess what? Now, you are list building and now you have people you can chat with via email who will, over time, get to know, like, and trust you.
Then after they trust you, the door will be open eventually get them to purchase from you and that is what we are after.
